VAT calculator for small businesses

VAT is the tax a registered business adds to its sales, 20% at the standard rate. You pay HMRC the VAT you charged, less the VAT you paid on your own costs.

The formula

VAT = VAT on sales − VAT reclaimed on costs

Worked example: £6,000 a month

The example is a UK software company in one month: £50,000 of revenue excluding VAT, 400 customers and £180,000 in the bank.

  1. VAT on sales: £50,000 × 20% = £10,000
  2. £10,000 − £4,000 reclaimed = £6,000 to pay

Try it with your numbers

Work out your VAT

Until you type a figure, the results show an example business. Fill in only what you know: from then on every result uses your figures alone, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

Your business numbers

Start with any one figure. Until you do, the results show the example business, whose figures are the grey hints in each box.

VAT for the example

Example

£6,000

a month

  1. VAT on sales: £50,000 × 20% = £10,000
  2. £10,000 − £4,000 reclaimed = £6,000 to pay
  • This is what you would pay HMRC for the period, before any scheme such as the Flat Rate Scheme.

Formula: VAT on sales − VAT reclaimed on costs.

VAT charged on sales
£10,000
Sales including VAT
£60,000

Everything your numbers show

For the example business: 29 of 29. Type your own figures to replace them. Select one for its page.

How to read your result

A negative figure means you reclaimed more than you charged, so HMRC repays the difference. If you are not registered, the result checks your yearly turnover against the £90,000 threshold.

Watch out for

VAT you collect is not your money: keep it aside for the return. If your turnover figure includes VAT, tick the box so it comes off your revenue.
