Profit and loss calculator
A profit and loss statement takes revenue and subtracts costs in layers: cost of sales gives gross profit, operating costs give EBITDA, then depreciation, interest and tax give net profit.
The formula
Profit and loss = revenue − all costs, interest and tax
Worked example: −£5,000 a month
The example is a UK software company in one month: £50,000 of revenue excluding VAT, 400 customers and £180,000 in the bank.
- Revenue £50,000
- − cost of sales £15,000 = gross profit £35,000
- − operating costs £39,000 = EBITDA −£4,000
- − depreciation £1,000 = operating profit −£5,000
- − interest £0 − tax £0 = net profit −£5,000
Try it with your numbers
Work out your profit and loss
Until you type a figure, the results show an example business. Fill in only what you know: from then on every result uses your figures alone, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

How to read your result
Each layer answers a different question. Gross margin shows the economics of the product, EBITDA the running costs, and net profit what is left for shareholders.
Watch out for
Profit is not cash. A profitable month with unpaid invoices can still drain the bank.
