GMV calculator

GMV is the total value of everything sold through a marketplace in a period. Your revenue is the cut you keep, so your take rate is revenue ÷ GMV.

The formula

GMV = total value of orders through the platform

Worked example: £250,000 a month

The example is a UK software company in one month: £50,000 of revenue excluding VAT, 400 customers and £180,000 in the bank.

  1. GMV a month: £250,000
  2. Your revenue £50,000 ÷ GMV £250,000 = take rate 20.0%

How to read your result

Rising GMV with a falling take rate means more trade but less of it for you. Investors usually ask for both figures.

Watch out for

Do not present GMV as revenue. Accountants and investors will treat it as a red flag.
