Full-time equivalent (FTE) calculator
FTE counts staff by hours: total hours worked a week divided by full-time hours. Two people on 18.75 hours each make one FTE at 37.5 hours.
The formula
FTE = total hours a week ÷ full-time hours
Worked example: 8.0
The example is a UK software company in one month: £50,000 of revenue excluding VAT, 400 customers and £180,000 in the bank.
- 300 hours ÷ 37.5 = 8.0 FTE

How to read your result
Revenue per FTE shows how much each full-time role brings in, and is a common way to compare companies at a similar stage.
Watch out for
Count freelancers who do core work, and say so, or the team looks smaller than it is.
