Year-on-year (YoY) growth calculator
Year-on-year growth compares a period with the same period a year earlier: (this year − last year) ÷ last year × 100. It takes out seasonal swings.
The formula
YoY = (this year − previous year) ÷ previous year × 100
Worked example: 67.7% year on year
The example is a UK software company in one month: £50,000 of revenue excluding VAT, 400 customers and £180,000 in the bank.
- (£520,000 − £310,000) ÷ £310,000 × 100 = 67.7%

How to read your result
Investors often look at year-on-year growth alongside monthly growth, because one good month can mislead.
Watch out for
Compare like with like. A full year against a nine-month first year makes growth look bigger than it was.
