VCT tax relief calculator

A venture capital trust is a listed company that invests in small UK companies. Investors who buy new VCT shares get 20% income tax relief on up to £200,000 a year if they hold them for five years.

The formula

VCT = amount invested × 20% income tax relief

Worked example: £4,000

The example uses the guide's seed round, £200,000 for 20%, with a matching cap table, exit, fund and market.

  1. £20,000 × 20% = £4,000 off the investor's income tax bill
  2. Net cost £20,000 − £4,000 = £16,000

Try it with your numbers

Work out your VCT

Until you type a figure, the results show an example business. Fill in only what you know: from then on every result uses your figures alone, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

Your deal numbers

Start with any one figure. Until you do, the results show the example business, whose figures are the grey hints in each box.

Everything your numbers show

For the example business: 27 of 27. Type your own figures to replace them. Select one for its page.

How to read your result

For founders, money from a VCT counts towards the same funding limits as EIS.

Watch out for

The relief is for new VCT shares. Shares bought on the market from another investor do not get it.
