Vesting calculator
Vesting means earning shares or options over time. With a cliff, nothing vests until the cliff date, then shares vest in equal monthly parts.
The formula
Vesting = nothing before the cliff, then equal monthly parts
Worked example: 180,000 after 18 months
The example uses the guide's seed round, £200,000 for 20%, with a matching cap table, exit, fund and market.
- 480,000 × 18 ÷ 48 months = 180,000

How to read your result
Four years with a one-year cliff is a common schedule for founders and staff. Check whether vesting speeds up if the company is sold.
Watch out for
Leaver terms decide what happens to vested shares when you leave. A bad leaver may lose some of them.
