MOIC calculator: multiple on invested capital
MOIC is what an investment returns as a multiple of what went in: proceeds ÷ amount invested. 3x means every £1 came back as £3.
The formula
MOIC = what comes back ÷ what went in
Worked example: 2.80x
The example uses the guide's seed round, £200,000 for 20%, with a matching cap table, exit, fund and market.
- 10.0% diluted by 30% = 7.00% at the exit
- 7.00% × £3.0m = £210,000
- £210,000 ÷ £75,000 = 2.80x

Work out your MOIC
It starts on the example. Replace any figure with your own; nothing you type leaves your browser.
Your MOIC
2.80x
- 10.0% diluted by 30% = 7.00% at the exit
- 7.00% × £3.0m = £210,000
- £210,000 ÷ £75,000 = 2.80x
Formula: What comes back ÷ what went in.
- Sale price for a 10x
- £10.7m

How to read your result
MOIC ignores time: 3x in three years is far better than 3x in ten. The IRR calculator shows that.
Watch out for
Allow for later dilution, or an early investor's share at the exit, and so the multiple, will be overstated.
